COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Meteorology says the deep depression that was located over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining southeastern sea areas has intensified into a cyclonic storm, which has been named Arnab.

Forecasters expect the system to continue tracking generally west to northwest, with further intensification likely as it moves across the west-central Bay of Bengal.

According to the Department of Meteorology, Arnab could strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by around 11.30 p.m. today, increasing the risk of hazardous marine conditions across a large section of the Bay.

Meteorologists warn that wind speeds in the affected sea areas could increase to between 80 and 100 kilometres per hour at times, while thunderstorms and heavy weather conditions are also expected.

Sea conditions are forecast to deteriorate significantly, with wave heights likely to reach between three and four metres. Authorities say the affected sea areas could become very rough and dangerous for navigation.

Fishermen and maritime communities currently operating in the affected regions have also been urged to move their vessels to safer locations immediately as the storm continues to strengthen.
