COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has congratulated Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his historic election victory in Brazil, describing the result as a triumph for democracy and a rejection of corruption, division and political deception.
Lula secured a fourth non-consecutive term as Brazil's president after defeating Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in the presidential runoff election.
In a message shared on social media shortly after the election result, President Dissanayake praised the Brazilian electorate for what he described as a decisive stand against political forces that sought to divide the country.
"Today, the people of Brazil did not just win an election; they defeated the forces of corruption, division and political lies."
The Sri Lankan President said Lula's victory carried significance far beyond the ballot box, portraying it as a reaffirmation of the power of people to shape their own future.
"Comrade Lula's historic victory in Brazil shows that the people cannot be fooled by bankrupt political dynasties and the ghosts of the past who believe might is greater than right."
President Dissanayake also extended his congratulations to the Brazilian leader, commending him for once again securing the confidence of the people and returning to lead one of the world's largest democracies.
"Many congratulations, companheiro, for leading the march of progress yet again!"
