COLOMBO (News 1st): President Anura Kumara Dissanayake warned that organised crime extends beyond drug trafficking, with armed criminal gangs recruiting members and carrying out shootings.
He made these remarks while addressing the National People’s Power (NPP) Women’s Rally in Badulla.
He said authorities had seized 93 T-56 firearms, 141 pistols and 105 revolvers within this year.
The President also referred to a recent arrest involving a suspect found in possession of a revolver, highlighting the threat posed by armed criminals.
Questioning the kind of country being left for the next generation, President Dissanayake stressed that building a safe environment for children requires dismantling both the drug trade and the underworld.
