COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan authorities have uncovered a major haul of heroin along Sri Lanka's southern coast, with approximately 120 kilograms of the narcotic recovered from the Kapparathota Beach area in Weligama.
The drugs were found packed in six sacks during a joint operation carried out by the Police Special Task Force (STF), the Sri Lanka Navy, the Police Narcotics Bureau and the Sri Lanka Coast Guard.
Police said the operation also led to the recovery of two satellite phones and a Starlink communication system believed to be connected to the suspected drug trafficking operation.
Meanwhile, a separate operation at sea resulted in the arrest of five individuals aboard a multi-day fishing vessel intercepted approximately 100 nautical miles off the coast of Dondra.
Navy Media Spokesman Commander Chaminda Walakuluge stated that the suspects had been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigations.
Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the origin of the heroin shipment and to identify those connected to the suspected drug smuggling network.
