COLOMBO (News 1st); The interim report of the special committee appointed to review and update the rules, regulations and standing orders under Sri Lanka's Prisons Ordinance was handed over to Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake at the Presidential Secretariat on Wednesday.

The committee was appointed following a discussion held on October 8 between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and members of the Maha Sangha representing the three Buddhist Nikayas.

The committee was tasked with examining the existing legal and administrative framework governing prisons and submitting recommendations within two weeks for the amendment of relevant regulations and standing orders.

According to the President's Media Division, the committee has now submitted revised proposals relating to regulations governing the imprisonment and treatment of Buddhist monks and other religious clergy.

The interim report was formally handed over by Committee Chairperson Prince Senadheera, Secretary to the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs.
