COLOMBO (News 1st) – The Department of Meteorology has warned of heavy rainfall across Sri Lanka from tomorrow (October 13), as a low-pressure area is expected to form over the southeastern Bay of Bengal.
In its weather forecast issued today (October 12), the department said showers or thundershowers are expected in most parts of the island over the next few days.
Heavy rainfall of between 100 and 150 millimetres is likely at some locations in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Southern provinces.
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 millimetres is also expected at some locations in other parts of the country.
Misty conditions may prevail in parts of the Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces during the early hours of the morning.
The department has urged the public to take adequate precautions against temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are expected in the sea areas surrounding the island over the next 24 hours.
Northeasterly or variable winds are expected at speeds of 20 to 30 kilometres per hour, while sea conditions are likely to remain slight to moderate.
However, temporarily strong gusts of 60 to 70 kilometres per hour and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.
The department has advised naval and fishing communities to remain alert to future weather forecasts and official bulletins regarding the developing system.
