COLOMBO (News 1st): The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber Advisory for Severe Lightning.
The advisory, issued today (11) and valid until tomorrow (12), says thundershowers accompanied with severe lightning are likely to occur at several places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, North-western and Southern provinces and in Anuradhapura, Mannar and Vavuniya districts.
Meanwhile, the Met Department says a low-pressure area is likely to form over Southeast Bay of Bengal around October 13.
Accordingly, the Department has urged the naval and fishing communities, are requested to be attentive to the future forecasts and bulletins issued by the department.
As a result, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas around the island.
Winds will be North-easterly or variable. Wind speed will be (20-30) kmph. Sea areas around the island will be slight.
Temporarily strong gusty winds (60-70 kmph) and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
Meanwhile, fairly heavy falls above 75 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and North-Western provinces and in Galle, Matara, Anuradhapura and Mannar districts.
The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces during the early hours of the morning.
