COLOMBO (News1st): The Vehicle Emission Testing Programme of the Department of Motor Traffic has taken steps to establish a special photographic unit to identify vehicles emitting excessive smoke.

The unit will monitor vehicles discreetly on public roads, with officers stationed at strategic locations in major cities across the island to photograph vehicles with excessive smoke emissions.

Based on the photographic evidence, maintenance orders will be issued to the respective vehicle owners on the same day.

Owners who receive such orders must repair their vehicles and present them for inspection at the Vehicle Emission Testing Centre in Werahera by the specified date.

Failure to comply with the order will result in the vehicle being blacklisted in the Department of Motor Traffic’s database.

The Vehicle Emission Testing Programme stated that blacklisted vehicles will face significant restrictions when obtaining revenue licences or transferring ownership.
