COLOMBO (News 1st): The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka says that the Governor of Montana Greg Gianforte, accompanied by First Lady Susan Gianforte and an official state delegation, will arrive in Sri Lanka tomorrow, October 9, for an official visit aimed at deepening agricultural trade and bilateral security cooperation,
According to the U.S. Embassy, a key focus of the visit is strengthening commercial ties in the agricultural sector.
As the top U.S. producer of pulses, including chickpeas, lentils, and dry peas, Montana is looking to open new export channels for its farmers.
During their stay, the delegation will meet with local pulse importers and traders to explore market opportunities and foster long-term partnerships with Sri Lankan businesses.
In addition to agricultural trade, Brigadier General Trenton Gibson, Montana’s Adjutant General and Commander of the Montana National Guard, will accompany the Governor’s delegation to advance defense cooperation through the State Partnership Program, which has linked Montana and Sri Lanka since 2021.
The statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Colombo further highlights the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in 2025 between the Montana National Guard and Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defense.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed to formalize and expand cooperation in disaster response, maritime domain awareness, and professional military education.
