COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court today ordered the further remand of three suspects, including the wife of former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena, until October 20 in connection with an alleged bribery case.
The order was issued when the suspects were produced before Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama.
The three suspects had been arrested on allegations related to the payment and facilitation of a bribe and were being held in remand custody until today.
According to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, the primary suspect was arrested on September 25 over allegations that a sum of Rs. 50,000 had been offered to a staff assistant attached to the Colombo High Court in an attempt to influence a judge to grant a suspended prison sentence to her husband.
The court staff assistant who allegedly accepted the bribe is also among the suspects arrested in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, the Registrar of the Minuwangoda Magistrate's Court was taken into custody over allegations of aiding and abetting the acceptance of the bribe linked to the same case.
