Illegal Consignment of Gold Jewellery Seized At BIA

COLOMBO (News 1st) - A suspect was arrested at the Bandaranayake International Airport in Katunayake with a consignment of gold jewellery which had been illegally smuggled into the country.

The gold seized is worth more than Rs. 36.5 million.

The arrest was made during a raid conducted by officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau.

The suspect is a 51-year-old businessman from Pallekele, Kandy.

He had also concealed the jewellery, weighing 996 grams, on his body in four parcels.

The suspect and the consignment of jewellery were subsequently handed over to Customs officials at the Bandaranayake International Airport in Katunayake.

Following a formal Customs investigation, the jewellery was confiscated, and the suspect was fined Rs. 3.7 million.
