COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has called on the Inspector General of Police to establish a special police unit dedicated to senior citizens.
The request was made in a statement issued under the signature of the Chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, retired Supreme Court Justice L. T. B. Dehideniya.
The Commission said it had requested the establishment of a dedicated police unit to address issues faced by senior citizens and safeguard their rights.
The Commission also said it had observed a growing trend of violations of the rights of senior citizens in Sri Lanka due to social and economic factors, as well as external influences affecting institutions.
It noted that both elderly people living in households and those residing in institutions are facing these challenges.
The Human Rights Commission said establishing a dedicated unit for senior citizens within the Police Department could help address such concerns.
