Ex-MP Secretary Arrested Over Rs. 8.1M Bribery Case

COLOMBO (News1st); A former secretary to Member of Parliament Chamara Sampath Dassanayake has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) for allegedly soliciting and accepting a bribe of LKR 8.1 million (8,100,000). 

The bribe was taken from three companies to facilitate phosphate exports outside established regulatory frameworks.

The Bribery Commission informed the Badulla Magistrate's Court that investigations were launched following an anonymous complaint received in 2023. The suspect faces charges of committing corruption.

According to CIABOC, the suspect engaged in corrupt practices in 2023 by granting approval to three companies to export phosphate via Lanka Phosphate Limited. The transactions bypassed standard procurement procedures and sold the resource at local market rates without considering higher global market prices.
