COLOMBO (News 1st): Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara says that the law must apply equally to everyone, including those in power, politics, public officials, and ordinary citizens.
He emphasized that treating people differently under the law based on whether they hold power is not the rule of law.
Minister Nanayakkara stressed that the crime in a society cannot be resolved through punishment alone while also emphasizing that the law must be enforced when a crime is committed.
He said the country's prison policy is aimed at going beyond punishment to rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
The Minister made these remarks while attending the passing-out ceremony of officers from the 13th Apprentice Second-Class Jailers' Course and the 105th Apprentice Prison Officers' Training Course recruited to the Department of Prisons.
The ceremony and parade were held at the Prison Training Institute grounds in Agunukolapelessa.
