Extreme Weather: Heavy Rainfall Triggers Minor Flood Risk in Several DS Divisions

COLOMBO (News 1st): Water levels in the Kuda Ganga have risen amid the prevailing heavy rainfall.

The Department of Irrigation has warned of a minor flood risk in the Bulathsinhala, Palindanuwara, and Madurawala Divisional Secretariat Divisions.

Residents in low-lying areas, as well as motorists using roads in these areas, have been urged to exercise heightened caution.

Meanwhile, the highest rainfall recorded over the past several hours was reported from Maliboda in the Kegalle District, at 103.5 millimetres.

Delwala Tea Factory in the Galle District recorded 93.5 millimetres of rainfall, while the Gurudiyapoththa Tea Factory area recorded 87.5 millimetres.

83mm of rainfall has been recorded in the Neboda area in the Kalutara District. 

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for several districts, due to the prevailing active Southwest Monsoon conditions. 

According to the Department, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts. 

Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely at some places in these areas.

The department urges the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
