Low-Pressure Area To Form Near Andaman Islands; Rainfall To Increase In Southwest From Today

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Department of Meteorology says an increase in rainfall is expected over the southwestern parts of the island from today and over the next few days.

Accordingly, showers are likely to occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North Western Provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Fairly heavy rainfall of around 50mm could be experienced in some areas of Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Meanwhile, the atmospheric disturbance to the North of the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal, is likely
to develop into a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours. 

The Met Department says due to its influence, wind speed
over the Bay of Bengal sea areas will increase during the next few days starting from today (19).

Wind speeds in the sea areas off the coast from Matara to Pottuvil, via Hambantota, could occasionally increase to between 50 and 60 kilometres per hour.

The Department has advised naval and fishing communities engaging in activities over these sea areas to be vigilant and be attentive to the future forecasts and bulletins issued by the Department in this regard.
