Driver in Fatal Mattakkuliya Crash Tested Positive for Cannabis

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police have confirmed that the driver of the vehicle involved in the fatal road accident in Mattakkuliya, which claimed the lives of three people, had consumed cannabis.

According to police, the finding was established following a medical examination conducted after the crash.

The accident occurred at around 9.15 p.m. yesterday (16) in the Ferguson Road Junction area of Mattakkuliya, Colombo.

Police said three people were killed in the collision, while ten others who sustained serious injuries were admitted to the National Hospital of Sri Lanka for treatment.

Investigations have revealed that the accident occurred when a car travelling at high speed from the Wattala direction went out of the driver's control and crashed into two three-wheelers and two motorcycles.

The victims who lost their lives have been identified as residents of Grandpass, Colombo 15 and Mattakkuliya. They were aged 44 and 64 years.

The driver of the car that caused the collision has been arrested.

Police said preliminary investigations have identified him as a businessman residing in the Mattakkuliya area.

Further investigations are being conducted by the Mattakkuliya Police.
