COLOMBO (News 1st); Construction of a new cardiac care complex at the Trincomalee District General Hospital commenced today under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The project aims to provide the people of the Eastern Province with comprehensive and advanced heart disease treatment services under one roof.

The project is being implemented under the Healthcare and Medical Services Improvement Project funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), at a cost of Rs. 2.403 billion.

Designed as a modern eight-storey cardiac care complex, the building will include state-of-the-art operating theatres, outpatient treatment facilities, inpatient wards and fully equipped laboratory services, enabling the hospital to provide a broad range of specialist cardiac treatments and diagnostic services from a single location.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by May 2028, after which the facility is expected to become one of the most advanced cardiac treatment centres outside Colombo.

During the event, President Dissanayake unveiled the commemorative plaque marking the commencement of construction and officially launched the project.

The President also took time to interact with hospital staff, engaging in a cordial discussion on healthcare services and the future development of medical facilities in the region.
