COLOMBO (News 1st) - Compensation provided to the families of Sri Lankan migrant workers who pass away while overseas has been increased to Rs. 1.4 million.
The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment said the revised compensation will apply to migrant workers who were deceased after June 26 last year.
Previously, families of Sri Lankan migrant workers that passed away while overseas received Rs. 600,000 in compensation.
As the first step under the revised scheme, Rs. 70 million in compensation will be provided today to the families of 50 migrant workers.
The payments will be made under the patronage of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath.
The Bureau said more than 160 families in total are eligible to receive compensation under the programme.
