Parliament to Vote on Scrapping Chief of Defence Staff Position

COLOMBO (News 1st): Parliament is scheduled to convene from tomorrow until September 11, with several important legislative matters set to be taken up during the sittings.

Among the key items on the agenda is a Bill seeking to abolish the post of Chief of Defence Staff, which is scheduled to be presented to Parliament on September 9.

A vote on the proposed legislation is expected to take place at 5.00 p.m. on the same day.

The position of Chief of Defence Staff was originally established to coordinate and manage joint operations among the three armed forces.

However, the Government has decided to abolish the post, citing the need to manage defence expenditure more effectively and the view that the position is no longer required.

Meanwhile, amendments introduced under the Women's Empowerment Act No. 37 of 2024 are also scheduled to be presented to Parliament for approval on September 10.
