Government Will Intervene To Protect Honest Police Officers, says Minister Ananda Wijepala

COLOMBO (News 1st): Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala says the Government is prepared to intervene to protect police officers who perform their duties honestly and with dedication.

He made these remarks at an event held in Galgamuwa yesterday.

Minister Wijepala said action could be taken to support police officers who face disciplinary measures despite carrying out their duties honestly and diligently.

However, he stressed that the Government would have zero tolerance for deliberate bribery, corruption, or fraud.

He said strengthening the rule of law and ensuring justice and fairness remain key responsibilities of the Government. He added that institutions including the Police, Prisons, Attorney General’s Department, and the judiciary are being strengthened to achieve these objectives.

The Minister affirmed that the Government has taken steps to break political influence over organized crime and expose links between organized criminal groups and the drug trade. He claimed that 67 organized crime suspects have been brought back to Sri Lanka so far, describing them as key figures involved in drug trafficking.
