Caught by CCTV Within Minutes: Pickpocket Arrested at Pettah Bus Stand

COLOMBO (News 1st); A suspect who allegedly stole a passenger's bag at the Pettah Bus Stand was arrested within moments of the incident after being identified through the facility's CCTV surveillance network, authorities said.

The theft, which occurred on August 23, was detected in real time through the CCTV monitoring system operated from the newly established operations centre at the Pettah Bus Stand.

According to authorities, Sri Lanka Air Force personnel on duty immediately responded after spotting the incident on the surveillance cameras. The suspect was swiftly identified, apprehended and subsequently handed over to the Sri Lanka Police for further action.

The CCTV monitoring system forms part of the newly modernized operations centre established at the Pettah Bus Stand under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative, aimed at improving public safety and security in one of the country's busiest transport hubs.

Officials noted that the surveillance network operates around the clock, providing 24-hour monitoring of activities within the bus terminal. In addition to detecting crimes such as theft and pickpocketing, the system is designed to facilitate rapid responses to emergencies, including passengers falling ill, accidents and other urgent incidents requiring immediate assistance.
