COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Disaster Management Centre states that 81,765 people from 25,628 families across seven districts have been affected by the prevailing dry weather conditions.

Monaragala is the worst-affected district, with 33,023 people from 10,264 families impacted.

The other affected districts are Ampara, Badulla, Batticaloa, Polonnaruwa, Ratnapura and Hambantota.

Drinking water distribution programmes have been launched in 20 Divisional Secretariat divisions across the seven affected districts.

The Disaster Management Centre said drinking water has so far been provided to 72,053 people from 23,048 families.

Additionally, heat advisories have been issued today for 10 districts across the island.

The Eastern and North Central Provinces, as well as Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu and Monaragala, are among the areas covered by the advisories.

The Department of Meteorology said the heat index, or the temperature felt by the human body, is expected to reach levels that require caution in some areas during the daytime.

The public has been advised to limit strenuous activities, remain in shaded areas and drink sufficient water.
