COLOMBO (News 1st): Extensive discussions were held at the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Governance, Justice, and Civil Protection regarding further strengthening the rehabilitation process for drug-addicted individuals, aimed at reducing prison overcrowding.
This was discussed when the committee convened under the chairmanship of Member of Parliament Dr. Najith Indika.
It was revealed during the meeting that rehabilitation programs are currently underway for 1,506 out of the 4,962 inmates convicted by courts for drug-related offenses.
It was also stated that plans have been drawn up to recruit the necessary officers for rehabilitation programs and to strengthen these programs at the Divisional Secretariat level across the island.
