Negombo Prison Clash Property Damage Estimates Over Rs.100 Mn

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Property damage caused by the unrest at the Negombo Prison has exceeded Rs. 100 million.

The Department of Prisons said investigations into the incident are still underway.

The clash between two groups of inmates at the Negombo Prison on the 5th of July resulted in extensive damage to property, as well as several inmate registration records.

32 individuals died in the incident, while more than 100 others were injured.

The Negombo Prison previously housed around 2,400 inmates. 

At present, more than 600 inmates remain at the facility.

The Department of Prisons said court proceedings involving some inmates at the Negombo Prison are being conducted online, while others are being physically produced before courts.

Meanwhile, Police Spokesperson ASP F.U. Wootler said a report on the investigation launched by prison authorities into the inmates involved in the recent unrest at Kuruwita, Pallansena and New Magazine Prisons is expected today.

Three inmates died in the unrest that occurred at New Magazine Prison on the night of the 6th, and at Kuruwita Prison and the Pallansena correctional and rehabilitation facility on the 7th.

Nearly 77 inmates were injured in the incidents.

Meanwhile, post-mortem examinations on the two inmates who died during the unrest at Kuruwita Prison are scheduled to be conducted today.
