Conservation Work Begins At Anuradhapura Western Monastery Complex

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Central Cultural Fund says conservation work has commenced at the Anuradhapura Western Monastery Complex.

Director General of the Central Cultural Fund, Dr. Nilan Cooray, stated that infrastructure facilities in the area will also be developed to enhance the experience of both local and foreign tourists.

The Western Monastery Complex consists of a number of monasteries featuring Padhanaghara buildings, which were constructed as residential and meditation spaces for Buddhist monks.

While certain sections of the complex have already undergone conservation, many areas have not yet received any preservation attention.

Historical sources reveal that during the 6th and 7th centuries AD, monks who separated from the Abhayagiri and Maha Vihara traditions used these monasteries as their residences, leading a life dedicated to meditation and spiritual practice.
