Former IGP C.D. Wickramaratne To Receive Full Police Honours At Final Rites

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The funeral proceedings of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Attorney-at-Law C.D. Wickramaratne will be held with full police honours.

According to police, the decision was taken after an open verdict was released following the post-mortem examination of the former IGP.

Accordingly, the funeral of former IGP will take place tomorrow evening at the Borella General Cemetery, with police honours.

The remains of the former IGP will lie in state from today, at a private funeral parlour in Borella.

Meanwhile, police have launched a specialist forensic examination to determine how the former IGP sustained the gunshot wound.

Mortal remains have been sent to the Government Analyst for further examination.

Police also said that the former IGP's mobile phone has been taken into police custody and will be examined following a court order as part of the ongoing investigation.

The pistol believed to have been used in the shooting has also been taken into police custody and will be sent to the Government Analyst for forensic analysis.

Statements have been recorded from the former IGP's spouse and the three police officers assigned to his security.

Former IGP C.D. Wickramaratne died from a gunshot wound at his residence in Thalahena on the morning of July 17. 

He was 63 years old when the tragic incident occured. 

Police stated that, based on the instructions of Inspector General of Police Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasooriya, investigations are being carried out by the Western Province South Special Investigation Unit and the Malabe Police.
