COLOMBO (News 1st): UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani has described the recent violence at the Negombo Prison as “deeply alarming”.

In a recorded message, she said the families of those killed and injured, including inmates and prison officers, deserve to know the truth and see accountability.

She welcomed the authorities’ decision to conduct investigations into the incidents, stating that they must be prompt, independent and transparent.

Shamdasani also highlighted concerns over detention conditions in Sri Lanka, including prolonged pre-trial detention, overcrowding and inadequate facilities.

She further urged authorities to provide the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka with unrestricted access to Negombo Prison and other detention facilities where allegations of torture and ill-treatment have been reported.
