Special Probe Launched Over Attack On Police Raid In Deraniyagala

COLOMBO (News 1st); Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala says that a special investigation has been launched into the incident where a group of police officers was attacked during a raid in the Nooriya Hambanagala area in Deraniyagala.

He said that a team of officers from the Police Special Investigation Unit has been appointed for this purpose. He further noted that a comprehensive investigation will be conducted regarding the conduct of both the police and the local residents during the incident.

Four suspects have already been arrested for allegedly attacking the police officers who went on the raid in the Deraniyagala Hambanagala area yesterday.

The four police officers injured in the attack are attached to the Avissawella police division Anti-Corruption Unit. 

They are currently receiving treatment at the Avissawella Hospital.

Police said that the officers were attacked when they arrived to raid a house following a tip-off received regarding drug trafficking. The raid was conducted yesterday morning based on information received that an “ICE” drug operation was being conducted at the said house. 

The arrested suspects also sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Deraniyagala Hospital under police protection.

They are scheduled to be produced before the Avissawella Magistrate tomorrow.
