COLOMBO (News 1st): Tar imports have faced disruptions due to the Middle East crisis.

The Road Development Authority (RDA) stated that due to the conflicts, it has been impossible to import tar from February to date.

The Authority mentioned that prompt measures are currently being taken to find solutions to this situation.

Accordingly, diplomatic-level discussions have already commenced with countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, India, Oman, and Russia regarding the import of tar.

Although many of these countries produce tar, the main issue that has arisen is the lack of tar products that meet Sri Lanka's standards and specifications.

100% of the tar products used for road construction in Sri Lanka are sourced from Dubai.

The Road Development Authority further stated that tar of such quality is scarce in other countries.

Sri Lanka's monthly tar requirement is 20,000 metric tons.

The Road Development Authority stated that as soon as the diplomatic-level discussions are successful, immediate steps will be taken to import tar through local suppliers.
