Shan Wijayalal Granted Bail in Corruption Case

COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Southern Province Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal de Silva was today released on bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court in connection with a corruption case involving alleged financial irregularities.

Colombo Chief Magistrate ordered that the suspect be released on two surety bails of Rs. 5 million each. 

The court also imposed a travel ban, directing Silva to surrender his passport to the court and prohibiting any overseas travel until further notice.

De Silva had been arrested by officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) earlier this week and was remanded in custody until today following his production before court.

The case against the former Chief Minister relates to allegations that he procured chairs worth Rs. 16.5 million from a private institution outside the proper procurement procedures.
