'Praja Shakthi' Mega Rural Drive Launched

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka today (2) launched the ambitious “Praja Shakthi - 1,000 Villages, 1,000 Projects” programme, marking a major nationwide initiative aimed at uplifting rural communities and strengthening the country’s grassroots economy.

The main launch event was held in Nanpamunuwa Hamuge Yaya, Piliyandala, under the patronage of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, bringing together Members of Parliament, government officials, and local representatives.

As part of the programme, a key project to revive abandoned paddy lands in the Hamuge Yaya area of Nanpamunuwa was officially commenced.

Under the “Praja Shakthi” programme, development activities are being simultaneously implemented across 1,000 Grama Niladhari divisions, covering all 341 Divisional Secretariat divisions in the country. 

Events related to the programme were carried out in multiple locations islandwide today, with the participation of public representatives and state officials.

The initiative is primarily aimed at alleviating rural poverty while promoting sustainable livelihoods and inclusive development.

Authorities emphasized that the programme also incorporates efforts to boost the production economy, enhance income-generating opportunities for communities, and strengthen national food security.

In total, 25,932 projects are scheduled to be implemented under the programme. 

The government has allocated an investment of Rs. 23 billion for the initiative.
