COLOMBO (News 1st); It was revealed at the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Transport, Highways, and Urban Development that certain drivers who are currently under suspension are still receiving salaries.

This information came to light when the consultative committee met in Parliament.

It was also disclosed during the meeting that around 400 to 500 drivers have been suspended due to various disciplinary issues.

The officials who attended the committee meeting pointed out that these salary payments have occurred due to legal procedures under various statutory conditions. They further noted that some of these suspended drivers are earning an income by working as drivers for private buses.

Minister Bimal Rathnayake instructed officials to promptly obtain the necessary legal advice and reconsider the procedures for taking disciplinary action.

Meanwhile, the final report of the sub-committee tasked with steering the transport sector toward a positive direction by strengthening its legal framework, and the interim report of the sub-committee aimed at transforming the Department of Railways into an efficient and satisfactory service provider, were presented to the Ministerial Consultative Committee.
