COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Department of Prisons says that a flu-like illness is currently spreading among inmates at the Angunakolapelessa Prison.
As a result, the transport of inmates to courts for legal proceedings has been temporarily suspended.
Spokesperson for the Department of Prisons, A.C. Gajanayake, stated that court proceedings related to inmates at the Angunakolapelessa Prison are currently being conducted online.
The transfer of inmates from other prisons to Angunakolapelessa has also been suspended.
Meanwhile, spokesperson for the Department of Prisons, A.C. Gajanayake says that tests conducted on the seven inmates admitted to the Hambantota General Hospital have confirmed that the inmates are not infected with Meningitis.
Gajanayake confirmed that these inmates received treatment for a common flu and have since been brought back to the Angunakolapelessa Prison.
However, he noted that two inmates continue to receive treatment at the Hambantota General Hospital.
Recently, an inmate detained at the Angunakolapelessa Prison died following a sudden illness, and the cause of death has not yet been identified.
