Election Commission Ready for Provincial Polls Under Parliament-Approved System

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Election Commission has stated its readiness to conduct the Provincial Council elections in accordance with the system that will be approved by Parliament.

This position was conveyed by members of the Commission when they appeared before the Parliamentary Select Committee appointed to submit recommendations on the holding of the Provincial Council elections. The meeting took place yesterday (22), with the participation of members and officials of the Election Commission.

Officials from the Attorney General’s Department were also summoned before the Committee and presented a report outlining the legal obstacles related to the conduct of the Provincial Council elections.

The Select Committee has been tasked with examining and reporting on the electoral system under which the Provincial Council elections should be conducted, while also providing recommendations and proposals on the matter.

The committee was recently appointed under the chairmanship of Minister Vijitha Herath.
