Court Orders Evidence-Based Charges Over War Memorial Incident

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Kaduwela Chief Magistrate’s Court today ordered that individuals accused of behaving disorderly near the War Heroes Memorial in Battaramulla be formally named as suspects and charged only if there is sufficient evidence.

The directive was issued when facts relating to the incident that occurred on the 18th were presented before Chief Magistrate Arun Indrajith Buddhadasa.

The Magistrate observed that merely presenting names of individuals linked to the incident is insufficient, emphasising that adequate evidence is required to formally identify them as suspects.

Attorney-at-law Kamal Wijesekera, appearing on behalf of Wimal Weerawansa, informed the court that his client is prepared to appear before the court voluntarily in connection with the incident.

After considering the submissions made, the Magistrate ordered that investigations into the incident be carried out and a report be submitted to the court.
