COLOMBO (News 1st); Prime Minister and Education Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya today (6) outlined plans for major reforms to Sri Lanka’s preschool education system, telling Parliament that changes are scheduled to be introduced in 2027.
Addressing Parliament, Dr Amarasuriya said the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education is currently taking the necessary steps to reform the existing preschool education framework. As part of this process, the National Institute of Education introduced a National Early Childhood Education Curriculum Framework in 2025.
In line with this framework, a preschool teachers’ guide and a model activity compendium are currently being developed. Dr Amarasuriya said arrangements have been made to train all preschool teachers at the provincial level, enabling them to use the National Early Childhood Education Curriculum Framework, the teachers’ guide, and the model activity compendium effectively.
The Prime Minister also said that work is underway to establish a national policy on preschool education, with implementation planned for 2026.
