MAPPED: Traffic Plan For May Day In Colombo

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police have announced comprehensive security arrangements, traffic control measures and road restrictions ahead of International Workers’ Day, as multiple May Day processions, rallies and commemorative events are scheduled to take place across Colombo and several other parts of the country on May 1.

In a statement issued by the Police Media Division, authorities said several major rallies, processions and public gatherings organised by political parties, trade unions and other organisations will be centred mainly in Colombo, while additional events are planned in other regions.

Police have been instructed to ensure public security, regulate traffic flow and maintain road safety during the events while allowing normal vehicular movement as far as possible.

Senior police officers in provinces outside Colombo have also been directed to take all necessary measures in relation to May Day rallies and meetings held in their respective areas.

Maharagama Rally and Traffic Arrangements:

The May Day rally organised by the National People’s Power is scheduled to be held at the public car park in front of the Maharagama National Youth Services Council. Due to the event, traffic congestion is expected in the Maharagama Police Division. Police have requested motorists to use alternative routes during the rally.

Maligawatte Rally:

A Samagi Jana Balawegaya May Day rally will be held at the P. D. Sirisena playground in Maligawatte.

Parking of buses will be limited to Jayantha Weerasekera Mawatha, Panchikawatte Road, Orabi Pasha Mawatha, Sangharaja Mawatha, Sumanatissa Mawatha, George R. De Silva Mawatha, Bloemendhal Street, Sirimavo Bandaranaike Mawatha, Baseline Road from Bandaranaike Junction to Dharmarama Road, Saddharma Mawatha, Aluth Mawatha.

Borella Rally: A Sri Lanka Freedom Party May Day rally is scheduled to take place at the Borella Campbell Park.

Bus parking will be on Baseline Road from Dematagoda junction to the General Cemetery junction, J. D. Perera Mawatha, Siridhamma Mawatha, Maradana Road, Ward Place and Alvitigala Mawatha.

Light vehicle parking will be on Leopold Place and Campbell Park Road.

Hyde Park Rally:

The Frontline Socialist Party will hold a May Day rally at Hyde Park Grounds, followed by a procession starting from Hyde Park and proceeding via Maradana Road, Dean’s Road, Lipton Circus, Union Place, Ibbanwala Junction and returning to Hyde Park.

Dam Street Rally:

A joint May Day rally organised by the Ceylon Bank Employees’ Union, Free Trade Zones and General Services Employees’ Union will be held at the E. A. Gunasinghe grounds in Kompanna Veediya.

The procession will begin near the Lake House premises, proceeding via Olcott Mawatha, Gunasinghapura Junction and Saudrs Plance.

Borella - Cotta Road Rally:

A May Day rally organised by the Communist Party of Sri Lanka and the Socialist People’s Front will take place along Borella, Cotta Road and N. M. Perera Mawatha.

The procession will commence from Ayurveda Junction and proceed via Castle Street, Model Farm Junction, D. S. Junction, Borella Junction, Cotta Road.

Bus parking will be along Cotta Road from the railway crossing to Ayurveda Junction,.

Borella Park Avenue Rally:

A May Day rally by the Sarva Jana Balaya will be held at Borella Park Avenue.
