COLOMBO (News 1st); Hambantota International Port (HIP) has recorded one of its highest‑volume vessel calls to date after successfully handling the container vessel MSC Marie Leslie.
The vessel, operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), was berthed at HIP from April 11 to April 15, 2026.
During this period, the port carried out 7,968 container moves, translating to a total throughput of 13,260 TEUs, the highest single‑vessel container volume handled by the port so far.
The milestone surpasses previous records set earlier this year, including 12,957 TEUs handled on MSC Ilenia and 11,369 TEUs on MSC Ruby in March, highlighting a steady upward trend in Hambantota Port’s container handling performance.
Port officials said the operation demonstrated HIP’s growing operational strength and its ability to manage high‑volume vessel calls efficiently.
Chief Operating Officer of Hambantota International Port Group, Tommy Yang, said the achievement reflected strong coordination, discipline and capability across all operational functions. He added that as container volumes continue to increase, the port remains focused on delivering safe, efficient and reliable services to customers.
