COLOMBO (News 1st) - Ven. Pannakara Thero has arrived in Sri Lanka from Texas, USA, with "Aloka" in preparation for the Global Walk For Peace in Sri Lanka.
All arrangements have been finalized for the march, which begins tomorrow and will continue across Sri Lanka until April 28.
In parallel with the Walk For Peace, an Asa Disa Pooja will take place, commencing today at 3.00 p.m. at the sacred grounds of the Ruwanwelisaya in Anuradhapura.
The full coordination of the International Walk For Peace is being carried out by the Maharaja Media Network.
Ven. Pannakara Thero joins 12 other monks, including Ven. Rathana Sa Thero of Thailand, who arrived earlier on Friday.
From April 21 to April 28, the monks, led by Venerable Pannakara Thero, founder of the American Peace Walk, will undertake the Walk for Peace in Sri Lanka, a seven-day journey across some of the island’s most sacred Buddhist sites, culminating at Independence Square in Colombo.
The monks will be accompanied by Aloka the dog that has become a global celebrity and an international icon of the walk.
Upon arrival, the delegation is scheduled to visit the Attanagalla Rajamaha Viharaya for a media briefing before traveling to Anuradhapura to pay respects to the historical Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, with "Aloka."
Led by Most Venerable Pannakara Thero, the monks will carry with them a sapling from the Sacred Sri Maha Bodhi on the walk.
From April 22, the walk will move steadily southward, passing through key towns and cities:
April 22 – Dambulla
April 23 – Matale
April 24 – Kandy
April 25 – Belligammana
April 26 – Tholangamuwa
April 27 – Yakkala
April 28 – Kelaniya to Independence Square, Colombo
The final walk from Kelaniya to Independence Square will mark a powerful culmination, a symbolic arrival at the nation’s most prominent civic space, where faith meets democracy and peace meets the future.
