Two Dead in Mihintale and Dehiowita Drowning Incidents

COLOMBO (News 1st);Two people have drowned in the Mihintale and Dehiowita areas.

A 55-year-old man has died in the Maradankulama Tank in Mihintale during a rescue attempt.

According to police, the deceased, a resident of the area, had been bathing with a friend when he noticed two children drowning and went in to rescue them. Police confirmed that the two children were not injured.

Police said he was a resident of the same area. 

Meanwhile, another person has drowned while bathing in the Seethawaka River in the Hinguralakanda in Dehiowita. Police said the victim is a 17-year-old resident of Lunugala, Badulla. He had gone to a relative’s house in the Dehiowita area and had met with the accident while bathing.

Police are advising the public to avoid bathing in unfamiliar locations during weekend outings. 
Police Media Spokesperson ASP F. U. Wutler also urged the public to pay attention to warning signs placed in areas unsuitable for bathing.

Meanwhile, police also stated that 20 people have died due to drowning during the five-day period from April 12 to 16.
