China Pushes for Safe Navigation in Strait of Hormuz

COLOMBO (News 1st); China has expressed firm support for maintaining the momentum of a ceasefire and continuing peace talks, stressing that such efforts serve the fundamental interests of the Iranian people and reflect the shared expectations of countries in the region and the wider international community, according to Xinhua.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks on Wednesday (15) during a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi.

Wang said China supports efforts to sustain the ceasefire and promote dialogue, describing the current moment as critical for advancing peace.

Wang said the situation has reached a critical stage between war and peace, adding that a window for peace has now opened. He called for respect for and protection of Iran’s sovereignty and legitimate rights as a country situated along the Strait of Hormuz, while also emphasizing the importance of ensuring the freedom and safety of international navigation through the strategic waterway.

Restoring normal navigation through the strait is a shared demand of the international community, Wang said, noting its importance for regional stability and global energy security.

Following President Xi’s four-point proposal, Wang said China is ready to continue promoting de-escalation, supporting improved relations among regional countries, and playing a constructive role toward achieving lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.

During the conversation, Araghchi briefed Wang on the latest developments in Iran–U.S. negotiations and outlined Tehran’s considerations.

He said Iran is willing to continue seeking a rational and practical solution through peace talks. Araghchi also expressed appreciation for China’s continued efforts to help ease regional tensions and said Tehran hopes Beijing will play a positive role in promoting peace and ending the war.

For his part, Wang reaffirmed that China consistently supports Iran in safeguarding its sovereignty, security, and national dignity.
