COLOMBO (News 1st): Veteran western vocalist Antoinette de Alwis has passed away.
A prominent figure in Sri Lanka’s western music scene since the 1960s, she was also the mother of acclaimed singer Ashanthi de Alwis.
Antoinette De Alwis was celebrated for her versatility, with a repertoire spanning evergreens, jazz, pop, soul, and contemporary R&B, earning her a reputation as one of the country’s most iconic western vocalists.
She led her own band, Antoinette and the Gaylords, before later joining the Peter Prins Combo.
She was also a songwriter, best known for evergreen hits including We Are Sri Lanka.
Her passing marks a significant loss to Sri Lanka’s music industry.
