COLOMBO (News 1st); Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on the United Nations to hold the United States and Israel accountable and require them to pay reparations for attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, according to Iran’s Press TV.

In a letter sent on Sunday to the UN secretary-general and members of the Security Council, Araghchi described recent attacks on Iran’s civilian nuclear facilities as war crimes and acts of aggression against international peace.

He stated that Iran must be fully compensated for the damage caused by the attacks.

Araghchi said the strikes targeted facilities in Natanz, in central Iran, as well as areas near the Bushehr nuclear power plant on the Persian Gulf coast. He described the attacks as violations of the UN Charter, the Statute of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and peremptory norms of international law.

Referring to UN laws and regulations, the Iranian foreign minister wrote that the state responsible for such internationally wrongful acts is obligated “to cease that act,” “to offer appropriate assurances and guarantees of non-repetition,” and “to make full reparation for the injury caused by the internationally wrongful act,” including compensation for the damage caused.

In the same letter, Araghchi also urged the UN Security Council to require Israel to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

“The Security Council must enforce its previous resolutions regarding the regime, and accordingly demand that the Israeli regime must renounce the possession of nuclear weapons, accede without delay to all international legally-binding instruments banning weapons of mass destruction,” he said.

The letter came a day after Iran announced that part of its nuclear facilities in Natanz had come under attack amid what it described as an ongoing US-Israeli aggression against the country.

Iran has repeatedly condemned what it described as reckless US and Israeli attacks on its nuclear sites, saying they have been carried out under the banner of combating Tehran’s alleged efforts to build nuclear weapons.

According to Press TV, the latest developments come as numerous UN reports have confirmed the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear activities and its compliance with international norms and standards.
