COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Ministry of Transport has announced that the proposal to increase bus fares will be submitted to the Cabinet tomorrow.
Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, Prasanna Gunasena, said that the relevant set of proposals is being finalized throughout the course of today.
Deputy Minister Prasanna Gunasena stated that while the recent Rs.22/= fuel price hike technically triggered a 1.84% increase under the current pricing formula, bus fares usually remain unchanged unless the impact exceeds a 4% threshold.
However, with yesterday's additional fuel price hike anticipated to push that figure beyond 4%, the Minister confirmed that a fare increase is now expected.
Gunasena emphasized that a minimum fare will be implemented to ease the burden on the public.
