COLOMBO (News 1st); Amid the ongoing global fuel crisis, Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Education has issued a set of guidelines on the continuation of school activities, in line with measures introduced under the country’s Fuel Pass system.
In a circular issued to all principals and education authorities, the Secretary to the Ministry of Education has instructed that every Wednesday be treated as a school holiday, with students engaging in self‑learning activities from home. Schools have been directed to provide appropriate assignments and learning tasks to facilitate home‑based study on those days.
The circular further states that all programmes and events organised by schools have been temporarily suspended, as part of efforts to reduce fuel consumption.
Principals have also been instructed to temporarily suspend vehicle parades and other activities that require heavy fuel usage.
In addition, the Ministry has announced that school educational excursions, including those already planned for the coming days, have been temporarily suspended until further notice.
Students are not to be allowed to participate in such trips during this period.
The measures form part of a broader national effort to manage fuel consumption during the global energy crisis, with authorities seeking to minimise non‑essential travel while ensuring continuity in education through alternative learning arrangements.
