Authorities Issue Landslide Alert As Heavy Showers Forecasted

COLOMBO (News 1st); A landslide warning has been issued for several areas in the Kandy and Badulla districts.

The National Building Research Organisation has advised residents of Nildandahinna and Walapane areas in the Nuwara Eliya district, as well as the Meegahakivula and Kandaketiya areas in the Badulla District, and the Maturata and Haguranketha areas in the Nuwara Eliya Districtto remain vigilent. 

Meanwhile The road from Sungawila to Somawathiya has been temporarily closed to light vehicle traffic due to the rising water level of the Mahaweli River.

According to the latest weather forecast issued by the department of Meterology, Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Trincomalee via Hambantota and Batticaloa. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the other sea areas around the island in the evening or night.

Winds will be North-easterly to northerly in the sea areas from Mullaittivu to Colombo via Kankasanthurai and Puttalam. 

Winds will be South-westerly or variable in the other sea areas around the island. Wind speed will be (30-40) kmph.

The sea areas around the island will be moderate.
