A deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal has weakened and is expected to cross the Trincomalee and Jaffna coast around noon today, according to the Meteorological Department.

As of 4 am, the system was located approximately 100 km north-northeast of Trincomalee and was expected to weaken further into a low-pressure area by 5:30 am.

The pressure system is likely to bring heavy rainfall to the Northern Province, with wind speeds reaching up to 70 km/h. The North Central Province can expect winds of 40-50 km/h, while the Eastern Province may experience winds of 30-40 km/h. The Western Province is also expected to experience winds of 40-50 km/h today.

Fishing and naval activities are suspended in the deep and shallow sea areas from Galle to Colombo, Puttalam, Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee, and Batticaloa to Pothuvil.

Landslide warnings are in effect for parts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Matale, and Badulla districts.
