Airline Crew Member Arrested at BIA with Rs. 45.9 Million Worth of Gold

COLOMBO (News 1st): An airline cabin crew member has been arrested with a consignment of gold jewellery and gold biscuits illegally brought into the country.

Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport, in Katunayake, arrested the suspect in the early hours of this morning.

The seized stock of gold jewellery and gold biscuits is valued at Rs. 45.9 million, with a total weight of 1 kilogram and 163 grams.

The suspect is a 27-year-old employee of a private airline, residing in the Colombo area. Investigations revealed that she had concealed the gold items inside her travel luggage and attempted to smuggle them into the country.

According to our correspondent, she was arrested while attempting to exit through the crew exit gate at the airport’s arrival terminal.
