COLOMBO (News 1st); A special session of the Galle Municipal Council descended into chaos as opposition members disrupted proceedings and allegedly harassed council officials.

The council, currently under the control of the National People’s Power (NPP), faced strong resistance from opposition representatives from the very start of the session.

Their protest centered on claims that the budget approval during the previous council meeting was unlawful.

On December 24, the council approved the budget with 21 votes in favor and 15 against, securing a majority of six votes.

However, opposition members argue that the vote count was not conducted properly by officials, raising questions about the legitimacy of the process.

During today’s heated session, opposition members reportedly went as far as splashing water on municipal officials, escalating the situation further.

As tensions spiraled, Mayor Sunil Gamage intervened and announced a suspension of the meeting at approximately 10:20 a.m., postponing proceedings for half an hour in an attempt to restore order
